Recruiting Great Employees For Your Hospitality/Tourism Business

If you want to hire the best people for positions in your business, look no further than your own backyard. You already have a wealth of experience working for you so why not capitalize on that experience?

Go With What They Know

As a manager you may be required to hire and fire all the time, but once you’ve hired someone in a certain position, do you know exactly what is involved in doing that job on a day to day basis?

Just as you may use seasoned staff as mentors once new recruits are on the job, why not use these same people to help you hire them? Who better to interview a potential server than another server? If you want to know how the front desk of a hotel is run, ask the concierge. This is an excellent strategy, especially if your business is experiencing high turnover.

When you collaborate with your current staff you will get an honest and unbiased look at a potential candidate. Your top performers will be able to tell you whether or not someone is worth a second look.

Don’t discount who your staff know outside of work. One of the great strengths of working in the hospitality and tourism industry is meeting all kinds of people and you never know where your next great star is going to come from.

Peer Interviewing Builds a Stronger Team

You want your staff to interview candidates that exhibit the same traits they themselves carry on the job. You may coach your employees as to what questions to ask, but let them conduct the interview on their own. If the candidate they have recommended is hired, the employee can take pride knowing they had a hand in recruiting and hiring a strong team member.

This will result in better job performance from both people. The employee wants to make sure the person they recommended succeeds, which will reflect well on both of them. The person who was hired wants to perform well and to prove that your employee was correct in their decision to recommend them in the first place.

It’s a Win-Win for All

Using this method of recruiting and interviewing is proven to lower employee turnover, build stronger relationships among team members, and narrow the gap between employees and management.

When the entire team views the organization as a ‘we’ instead of an ‘us’ and ‘them,’ profits go up, customers are treated to a truly ‘wow’ client experience, and everyone can participate in building a rewarding, high-performing and profitable culture for the whole team.
