Weighing Job Seeker Personality vs. Experience When Hiring

In some cases it may be prudent to hire a person with a great personality even if their resume lacks the experience and skill you require for the role. This is true for many positions in the tourism and hospitality fields.

Match The Role to the Requirements

For most front line personnel, personality is a key factor. When looking at your candidate’s resume, check to see where they worked, how long and in what position. This will give you a good idea if they were the first point of contact in an organization or hidden in the wings.

Even if the candidate doesn’t possess the skill set you’re looking for, remind yourself they can be trained. Trying to coach a person’s personality is near impossible. If they are naturally an introvert, they may not be your best choice for customer-facing roles.

If you are looking at fulfilling certain behind-the-scenes roles, then experience will carry more weight. You will want someone who possesses the skills for these roles. For example, the sous chef you’re looking for will require certain skills, as will your housekeeper, your security personnel, and your special events staff.

Balance The Team

Take into consideration the personality traits and the skill sets of the team you already have in place. Are they equal? You want the strength of your team on the front lines to be supported and balanced by the team in non-facing roles. Does your restaurant brag about the excellent menu and the attentive, friendly wait staff?

Two Birds, One Stone

There are those roles that will require both personality and skills. Limousine drivers, airline attendants, and cruise personnel would fall into both of these categories.

Repeat Business Is The Goal

Remember what you are looking for is a team that will bring out the best in each other, providing the most dynamic and superior customer experience. You cannot put a price on customer loyalty. By securing a team balanced between personality and skills, you will be well on your way to a high volume of repeat business. This can only grow in profit and customer satisfaction.
