Should Your Gut Help You Decide to Hire That New Employee?

posted on: 2012-06-21

Very often when we interview someone there are certain questions that need to be asked based on the procedures of the company we represent. We want to know concrete results.

What's On Paper May Be Fictional

A person may represent themselves well enough on paper but what about in person? Have you ever interviewed a person that just rubbed you the wrong way, or you got a ‘feeling’ about someone, hired them anyway and then regretted it?

Never hesitate to ask if targets were met - did the candidate reach productivity goals as outlined in their previous work history? Do they possess the right qualifications on paper? If all of these questions are answered to your satisfaction, is the candidate in fact the right person for the job? Not necessarily.

Do You Speak Body Language?

There are plenty of physiological factors that we may be unaware of when interviewing a candidate. The way your own body reacts may be a good indicator about whether or not you feel the person would be a good fit for your team. Notice the body language of the person in front of you, but be mindful of your own as well.

Do they smile, are polite and make you feel at ease? Do they exude a confidence without an air of arrogance? Do you find yourself smiling in return? Or does the person make you tense and you don’t know why? Do they make you feel like they’re doing you the favour by interviewing them? As human beings we tend to mirror back that which is presented to us.

Listen To Your Own Instincts

Do not dismiss your instincts when it comes to interviewing potential candidates. Does the resume itself give you a good or bad feeling? Does the resume make you want to meet the person who wrote it?

Asking all of the questions you have to ask is necessary, and letting your intuition guide you to the right candidate will making choosing the right person for the right position that much easier.
